I Never Wore the Uniform, But I Still Found a Way to Serve

Philip R

I am the writer, composer, and producer of “We Are America – Don’t Test Your Luck,” an original military-themed song and video created in tribute to the strength, readiness, sacrifice, and resolve of the men and women of the United States Armed Forces.

Military service has run through my family for generations. From the time my family first came to America, one or more men in every generation served in the United States military until my own. My grandfather served in the U.S. Army during World War II, my father served in the U.S. Air Force, one of my sons served as a U.S. Navy Master-at-Arms, and another has served in satellite-communications leadership roles, both overseas and Stateside. He is currently serving as a Drill Sargent.

I had always expected to serve as well. When military service was no longer available to me for medical reasons, I chose the closest path I could find. As a civilian contractor and subcontractor supporting the U.S. Departments of Defense and State, I worked on military installations in Doha, Qatar; Kaiserslautern, Germany; and Baghdad, Iraq, providing dental care to American service members and officers.

I never wore the uniform, but serving those who did became my way of contributing.

“We Are America – Don’t Test Your Luck” grew from that lifelong respect for the men and women who serve, and for the families who stand behind them.

We’d love to hear from you
