Why I served
Lasonja W
Most people walk into a recruiters office looking to join the military to continue their families legacy, take advantage of educational benefits or to travel the world. During my 21 year career;
I had the pleasure of doing all three. I walked away with multiple degrees and saw parts of the world I would have only dreamed about. While I grew up in a big city, I didn’t know many people who travelled frequently or had passports. So I consider myself very blessed for the opportunities that the military provided.
The military opened doors that I never thought were possible and helped shape me to become the strong, successful woman that I am today. During my journey I had two kids who were also able to travel the world. Between military duties and personal travel I was able to visit 17 countries. After 7 PCS moves; my most memorable assignment was definitely being stationed in the United Kingdom.
Sometimes I close my eyes and think about the sights and sounds of London England, the crisp cool air in Norway, the history of the Coliseum in Rome Italy, the beautiful Mosques in Turkiye, the Eiffel Tower in Paris France, the crystal blue water in Cuba, the smell and taste of the wine in Spain and one of my favorite memories was the sounds of the bag pipes being played in Edinburgh Scotland.
The military lifestyle is very unique and often misunderstood by many. While everyone has their own personal reasons for taking the oath to serve; I look back at my time and don’t regret a thing. I’m forever grateful for the opportunities that were given to me and my family and still spend my days as a retiree mentoring servicemembers. I like telling stories about my time traveling as well.
