From Army Brat to AF Retiree

Carol K

I am so proud to be an Army brat. My Dad served 22 years in the Army, serving during WWII, jumping at Normandy, being only 1 of 3 of his plane load who survived, being captured twice and placed in a concentration camps, then going on to serve in Korean War. While my Dad was away we lived with my grandfather but after his passing we started moving with my Dad. First to Fort Bragg, NC in 1956, to Germany 1959 to 1961 and finally to Fort Campbell, KY for his finally 4 years.

Those years and his dedication to this country helped make me who I am today and instilled in me a patriotism that still exist to this day. So much so that after finishing nursing school in Virginia I joined the Air Force in 1970 and went on to serve 20 years in the nurse corp. My 20 years took me to Nellis AFB, NV for 4 years, Udorn Thialand 1 year, Homestead AFB 2 years, 2 years in an AFIT assignment at Catholic University for my bachelor’s degree in nursing, 4 years at Andrew’s AFB, MD, 3 Years at Wurtsmith AFB and finally to Altus AFB, OK where I retired in 1990.

But that is not the end of what this country has done for me. In Altus I started teaching nursing but needed my Masters Degree and because of my service the VA benefits allowed me to earn my Masters in Nursing Education from the University of Oklahoma. To say I am Proud to be An American is an understatement. My Dad’s parents were Polish immigrants and he was proud to serve this country as was all 3 of his children. My older brother served in the AF for 2 years and my younger brother retired from the Army following in his Dad’s footsteps as a paratrooper.

God blessed our family so much with the life we have had in this country, the experiences and people we have met over the years and I am so grateful for the USA.

We’d love to hear from you
