One of the ground breakers
Robin S
Upon graduation from high school in 1974, I joined the Army for three years with the guarantee to be a Military Policeman and to be stationed in Germany. I didn’t want to follow my classmates to college at that point. I attended WAC basic training at Ft McClellan, AL (now closed), then attended Military Police school at Ft Gordon, GA (my barracks is now the Thrift Shop and the rest of the area is NG Youth Challenge). After Christmas I travel to Worms, Germany.
I was one of the first four females to arrive at our MP Det, they had no place for us to stay and no weapons for us, so they stuck us on the MP desk to type, because that’s what women do, right? Later I went to MPI school (Military Police Investigator) in Mannheim, then transferred to Karlsruhe. Our Kaserne eventually closed and our barracks are nice apartments on the economy.
At that duty station, I met my future husband. He continued in the Army and retired. Our adventures brought us two children born at Ft Polk, LA and Ft Knox, KY. We Were at Ft Rucker, Ft Drum, Ft Leonardwood, Korea, recruiting in Ohio, and lastly a reserve assignment out of Louisville, KY. Forty-nine years of adventures.
I wouldn’t change that part, but I wish women “back then” were mentored, put before boards, encouraged, and that I would have done the reserves. Proud to call myself a veteran and a military spouse.
